Anyone have a pic of how a 1st gen spare tire mounts? Mine is missing (of course) and I need to fabricate one.

My manual says there is a chain, but I see some sort of crank system...

There is a chain. I will look tomorrow at it if i can get to it through the snow. If I recall there was a crank system that lowered a chair with something on it to hold the tire on it. I never put the spare back up after using it and that damn chain came down and jingled on the ground for miles, I just left it like that till it fixed itself

Haha, I love when stuff fixes itself. Thanks for checking on it for me!

I might have the spare tire mount assembly that I took off the race car, but as I recall it was frozen solid with rust. I'll take a look and see if it's still around. Might be able to free it up if I soaked it in penetrating oil or something.

Hmm, I'm gonna have to take a better look at mine. Does the chain itself lower or does the bracket in the tire kinda ride down the chain?

This is all I got, no chain or part that goes through the rim...

So I guess the chain goes up and through that crank thing attached to the frame, then goes to the spring bracket holding the rim? The length of chain then just gets attached to something else on the frame or leaf spring to keep it from dangling around?

Can I get a measurement on that chain(LxW of a link)? All my chain is too big, I think if I find the right chain, I can easily fab that bracket for the tire. Btw, I'm so glad to see more people frequenting this site!

give me a few days its snowing again. If I remember the chain goes up and down, the bracket attaches to the chain some how and the spring give a cushion to keep the tire tight. Now I have not messed with that thing in about 20+ years and could be wrong, it has happen before. I think I have a repair manual I'll see if it has a picture also

Awesome, thanks. I have a couple of repair manuals, but none of them show how it works. Not a big deal though, pretty sure I got that part figured out, just gotta find the right size chain.

Found it. So it does what I thought, just need to find the right chain. I took the assembly apart (as I always do) and took it to home depot with no luck. Looks like the links might measure 1"x3/4" just measuring from where it lays in the assembly.
