Hey guys,
I just picked up a '78 courier last week that was not running due to lack of fuel delivery. I had replaced the pump and filter with no luck until I found a cracked fuel line top side of the tank under the bed.
Since the lines have been replaced I am able to run the truck ( although it idles rough ) and take it on short drives around the block before it starts to backfire and falls on it's face. It only wants to run at wide open throttle, but runs at high rpm when doing so. Anything less than that and it sputters, backfires etc. until it totally dies.
Once I prime the pump for a minute or two it fires right back up and drives fine for another 2-3 minutes before repeating symptoms.
The truck has a ( I believe factory ) Hitachi carb that I have tried messing with but have not had any luck. New plug wires and distributor, as well as everything fuel related from the tank to the carb. I have yet to receive my repair manual that I ordered online, but have checked timing with a light and it seems to be in the right spot as far as I can tell, about 6 degrees advanced.
After messing with the carb just now it seems like my accelerator pump isn't working correctly. I am looking into rebuild kits or replacements.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
sounds like you might have a vaccumn leak, check all hoses and make sure carb is bolted good,
