Hi my name is Chris. I recently was fortunate to get my hands on a 1974 ford courier with a 1.8 motor! The issue I'm having is a ticking/tapping sound from the top of the motor. It sounds like a bad lifter(just to describe the sound). I know it does not have lifters due to it being an overhead cam motor. What I have done to rectify the sound: I replaced the timing chain, guides, sprockets, auto adjuster, oil pump, water pump, gaskets all around, cleaned the carbon buildup out of the motor and head, changed the oil and filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, ignition coil, adjusted timing. It used to have emission equipment but it has all been removed due to being inoperative and not necessary where I live. Any advice on what to look at next would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Chris

Guess you can check the rocker arms and shaft. Use something to listen to the motor while running to find out where the sound is exactly coming from and go from there. I just got back into these trucks and don't rally remember all the ins and outs of these. Sorry for the lack of help.

Hi Chris, Did you check the valve last while you had everything apart? That might be a silly question but it sounds like you've knocked out what I would expect to be the normal wear items Doug

Did you properly set the lash, not judging your skills since You did all the other work, but I can’t remember if valve lash is set cold or hot
