I posted this before on FCC but I thought it would be a good topic to share.
If you have an MA 2.0 or VC 1.8 Jap motor that shares the same head, be aware that there is an "oil control plug" in the block that socket is drilled into the head with a step, ie, it is NOT a straight hole, there is interference in it if you shave the head. They sell a .010 head shim for this reason. If you shave the head more than .010, the head gasket will NOT seal as this oil control plug (that looks like a little hollow dowel on the block) will hang up the head, possibly cracking the head if you torque it down trying to seal the gasket. You need to through drill (remove the step) the hole in the head with the right 8mm bit (measure it!) so the shaved head will sit down correctly. IF you cut it over .010, and dont through drill the hole, use the .010 shim (sealant on block side, head gasket on top) to keep the hole clearance correct. You can do a quick check on your cut head by laying it on the block with no head gasket. If it lays flush, your OK, if it rocks even a little, clearance that hole. Dont try and remove the plug from the block as you'll ruin the O-ring and I have not found an OEM replacement for that , just a generic one thats a little oversized.

AFTERMATH>>> I tried to get the truck smogged (super clean before the valve job and head decking) and now the SOB is a gross polluter, NOx is off the scale as well as the HC levels. I think the head was shaved much more than the max .020 as spec'd in the manual. The only other thing I did was to weld up the leak in the muffler. So Im torn between just offing it to the first guy with a few hundred bucks as a parts truck (cant transfer title without smog in CA) or putting some more money into it to get it to pass so I can sell it. I know the wife just wants it gone. Im in So. Cal. Or jus tpull drivetrain and drop it in to my '65 Barracuda and have the only 5sp/2.0L '65 Mopar.
